Discover Ethiopian Coffee Culture in London

Coffee enthusiasts in London are always on the lookout for the next great brew. But how often do we think about the origins of our favorite cup? At Kaffa Coffee in Dalston, owner Yared Markos brings the rich Ethiopian coffee culture to the heart of the city, offering more than just a drink—he offers a cultural experience.

Yared, originally from Ethiopia, noticed a gap in the London coffee scene when he moved here in 2000. Despite the city’s booming coffee industry, he couldn’t find an authentic representation of Ethiopian coffee, the birthplace of the coffee bean. This inspired him to open Kaffa Coffee in 2004, a café that doubles as a cultural hub, showcasing Ethiopian heritage through its decor, events, and, of course, its coffee.

The name "Kaffa" is deeply rooted in Ethiopian history, originating from a kingdom that flourished between the 9th and 12th centuries. The coffee beans served at Kaffa Coffee are sourced directly from Yared’s family farm in Ethiopia, where wild, organic beans are harvested with care. This commitment to quality and authenticity is what makes Kaffa Coffee stand out in London’s crowded coffee market.

In addition to serving excellent coffee, Kaffa Coffee is a community-focused space. Yared hosts traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, live music, and cultural events, making his café a gathering place for those looking to connect over a shared love of coffee and culture. For Yared, coffee is more than just a drink—it's a way to blend cultures and build community.
