Filter Papers

The right filter paper is the finishing touch to any manual brewing setup — and the wrong one, or an unrinsed one, can add off-flavours that compromise even the best beans and technique. This collection covers filter papers and reusable filters for every brewer we stock: Hario V60 papers, Chemex filters, AeroPress filters, Filtropa basket filters for the Clever Dripper and batch brewers, Brewista x CAFEC abaca cone filters, Fellow Stagg X papers, Bruer cold drip filters, Toddy cold brew felt packs and paper bags, and reusable options including the Able KONE metal filter for Chemex and the Bruer reusable disc for AeroPress. We've been supplying UK coffee lovers and cafés with quality brewing supplies since 2008.

Finding the Right Filter for Your Brewer

Filter papers are brewer-specific — the wrong size or shape won't fit, and the wrong material will affect your cup. Here's a quick reference:

Hario V60: Use Hario V60 cone-shaped paper filters (size 01 for 1–2 cups, size 02 for 1–4 cups). Available in bleached (white) and unbleached (brown) versions. We also stock the Brewista x CAFEC abaca cone filters, which fit V60-style drippers and are made from abaca fibre — a popular choice among specialty coffee enthusiasts for their clean, neutral flavour profile.

Chemex: Use official Chemex square filters, which are significantly thicker than standard paper filters and remove more oils — producing the uniquely clean, sediment-free cup the Chemex is known for. The Able KONE (50% off) is a reusable stainless steel alternative for Chemex that allows more oils through, producing a fuller-bodied cup.

AeroPress: Use AeroPress micro-filters (350-pack, 10% off), which are small circular papers that fit the AeroPress filter cap. The Bruer reusable disc is a metal alternative for AeroPress that eliminates paper waste. The Bruer cold drip paper filters (350-pack, 40% off) are also AeroPress-compatible.

Clever Dripper & batch brewers: Use Filtropa size 4 flat-bottomed basket filters — one of the most versatile and well-regarded filter papers for basket-style drippers and electric batch brewers. Available in packs of 100 at £6.99.

Fellow Stagg X: The Fellow Stagg X brewer uses its own dedicated Fellow Stagg X paper filters (pack of 45). Currently sold out — check back for availability.

Cold brew: Toddy Home Cold Brew Systems use Toddy felt filter packs and paper filter bags. The Toddy Commercial system uses commercial paper filters. See all Toddy filter options in our cold brew collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I rinse my coffee filter paper before brewing?

Yes — rinsing your paper filter before brewing is strongly recommended for pour over and other drip methods. A quick rinse with hot water serves two purposes: it removes any residual papery taste from the filter that could transfer to your cup, and it pre-heats the brewer and vessel below, helping maintain a stable brew temperature. Simply pour hot water through the filter before adding your coffee, then discard the rinse water. This is a small step that makes a noticeable difference to cup cleanliness, especially with cheaper or unbleached papers.

What is the difference between bleached and unbleached coffee filter papers?

Bleached filters (white) are treated with oxygen or chlorine to achieve their colour. Unbleached filters (brown) skip the bleaching process. Both are safe to use. Bleached filters tend to have a more neutral flavour — less papery taste — and are the most commonly used in specialty coffee settings. Unbleached filters are a more eco-friendly choice as they undergo less processing, but they benefit particularly from a thorough pre-rinse to reduce any earthy or woody flavour. In practice, the difference in cup quality is minimal when both are rinsed properly.

What is the difference between paper and metal reusable filters?

Paper filters absorb most of the natural oils present in coffee, producing a cleaner, brighter cup with lower body and greater clarity — ideal for showcasing the nuanced flavours of specialty beans. Metal reusable filters (like the Able KONE for Chemex or the Bruer disc for AeroPress) allow oils and fine particles through into the cup, producing a fuller-bodied, richer brew with more texture — similar in character to French press. Neither is objectively better; the right choice depends on the cup style you prefer. Paper filters are also compostable, while metal filters reduce ongoing paper waste.

Which filter papers fit the Clever Coffee Dripper?

The Clever Coffee Dripper uses standard flat-bottomed basket filters — size 4. The Filtropa White Coffee Filter Papers (size 4, 100-pack, £6.99) are a well-regarded choice and work perfectly with the Clever. Filtropa papers are also compatible with most electric batch brewers. The Clever Coffee Dripper with Filtropa filter papers is available as a bundle in our immersion collection.

Can I use any cone filter in a Hario V60?

The Hario V60 uses its own cone-shaped filters with a specific seam placement that sits flat against the V60's spiral ridges. Standard cone filters from other brands may not fit correctly or may affect flow rate. We stock official Hario V60 filters as well as the Brewista x CAFEC abaca cone filters, which are specifically designed for V60-style drippers and are a popular premium alternative. For the best results, use filters designed for the V60 format rather than generic cone filters.

Do I need special filter papers for cold brew?

Yes — cold brew systems use their own specific filters rather than standard paper filters. The Toddy Home Cold Brew System uses Toddy felt filter packs (reusable) or Toddy paper filter bags. The Toddy Commercial system uses dedicated commercial paper filters. The Bruer cold drip system uses Bruer cold drip paper filters, which are also compatible with the AeroPress. All cold brew replacement filters are available in this collection and in our dedicated cold brew collection.
