Comandante

Comandante makes hand grinders that professionals take seriously. Handcrafted in Germany from aircraft-grade materials, the C40 has earned a reputation over more than a decade as one of the finest manual grinders in the world — used by World Barista Champions, specialty roasters and discerning home brewers who refuse to compromise on grind quality. The Nitro Blade® burrs, manufactured from high-nitrogen martensitic steel, produce a particle distribution consistently competitive with electric grinders costing many times more. The range has since expanded to include the X25 Trailmaster for adventurous outdoor use and the C40 MK4 Lab Series for analytical coffee work, alongside a carefully considered line of accessories and spare parts. We've been helping UK coffee lovers brew better since 2008.

The Grinders

Comandante C40 Nitro Blade Series

The flagship Comandante — and the grinder that established the brand's reputation. The C40 uses proprietary Nitro Blade® burrs machined from high-nitrogen stainless steel, a material chosen for its hardness, edge retention and resistance to oxidation. The result is a burr set that stays sharp through years of daily use and produces a notably uniform particle distribution — the foundation of clean, balanced extraction across any brewing method. The stepped adjustment system uses a click-based mechanism that allows repeatable grind settings with genuine precision; the Red Clix upgrade narrows the step interval for finer-grained adjustment between settings. The C40's wide adjustment range covers everything from Turkish-fine through to coarse French press. Available in a range of colour and material combinations. The definitive premium hand grinder for filter and pour-over brewing.

Comandante C40 MK4 Lab Series

A specialised version of the C40 designed for coffee analysis and research environments. The Lab Series uses the same Nitro Blade® burr set as the standard C40 but features modifications to the design intended for cupping, sensory evaluation and controlled brewing experiments where absolute consistency and repeatability are required. The MK4 designation indicates the fourth-generation C40 platform — the most refined iteration of the design. Available in a limited range of colourways.

Comandante X25 Trailmaster Hand Grinder

A ruggedised hand grinder built for use outside the coffee bar. The X25 Trailmaster is designed around portability and durability — lighter and more compact than the C40, with a construction engineered to handle the knocks and conditions of travel, hiking and outdoor brewing. The X25 uses a different burr set to the C40, optimised for filter brewing at its intended portable use case. The right Comandante for the brewer who wants premium grind quality in the field without compromising pack weight or robustness.

Accessories & Upgrades

Comandante Red Clix Drivetrain Set

The most popular Comandante upgrade. The standard C40 uses a click-step adjustment mechanism — the Red Clix replaces the internal drivetrain to halve the interval between steps, effectively doubling the number of available grind positions across the C40's full adjustment range. For pour-over and AeroPress brewers who dial in recipes precisely, the finer step interval makes a meaningful practical difference — allowing smaller adjustments between settings without overshooting the target grind size. A straightforward user-installable upgrade; no tools or specialist knowledge required.

Comandante C40 Felt Sleeve

A protective felt sleeve for the C40 body — wraps around the grinder cylinder to protect against scratches and impacts during transport or storage, and provides a slightly warmer grip in cold conditions. Available in multiple colours to coordinate with different C40 colourways.

Comandante Glass Bean Jar — Pack of 4

Replacement glass grounds jars for the C40 — the clear glass vessel that collects ground coffee below the burr assembly. A pack of four provides extended supply for replacement when jars are broken, or allows multiple jars to be loaded with pre-ground doses for consecutive brewing sessions. Compatible with the C40 across all generations.

Comandante Polymer Bean Jar

An alternative to the standard glass grounds jar in a durable polymer construction — lighter and shatter-resistant, making it better suited to travel and outdoor use where glass carries a breakage risk. Available in multiple colours.

Comandante C40 Travel Bag

A purpose-made padded travel bag for the C40 — sized to hold the grinder and its accessories securely, with a structured interior that protects the grinder during transport. Suited to baristas and enthusiasts who travel with their C40 regularly and want more protection than a sleeve alone provides.

Cranks & Tools

Two crank options are available for the C40. The standard Comandante Crank is the classic replacement handle for the C40. The Comandante Black Handle Crank is an upgraded version with a black handle finish — ergonomically refined and a popular aesthetic upgrade for C40 owners who want a more refined look at the bar. The Comandante Tool Bag is a compact pouch for carrying the grinder's accessories, adjustment key and spare parts together.

Spare Parts

Comandante stocks three mechanical spare parts for C40 maintenance and repair:

  • Washer and Bearing Spacer Set — stainless steel wear components for the C40 grinding assembly. Replace when the grinder develops play or wobble in the burr alignment.
  • Central Axle — the stainless steel central shaft of the C40 grinding assembly. A core structural component rarely requiring replacement under normal use, but available for complete restoration of older grinders.
  • Grind Grade Dial — the external adjustment dial for the C40 in black. Replacement for a damaged or worn adjustment dial without requiring a full grinder replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Comandante C40 worth the price?

For filter coffee — pour over, AeroPress, Chemex, batch brew — yes, without question. The C40's Nitro Blade® burrs produce a particle distribution that is genuinely competitive with mid-range electric burr grinders costing significantly more, and the grind consistency it delivers translates directly to cup clarity and extraction balance in filter brewing. The build quality is exceptional — a well-maintained C40 will last many years of daily use, and spare parts are available for long-term servicing. The value proposition is strongest for filter-focused brewers who want the best possible grind quality in a manual format, whether at home or travelling. For espresso, the C40 is capable but the manual effort at fine grind settings and the lack of very fine micro-adjustment make it less ideal than a dedicated espresso grinder for daily high-volume use.

What is the difference between the C40 Nitro Blade and the C40 MK4 Lab Series?

Both use the same Nitro Blade® burr set and the same fourth-generation C40 platform. The Lab Series is a specialist configuration intended for cupping, coffee analysis and research environments where controlled, reproducible grinding is a priority — the modifications are oriented toward analytical use rather than everyday home brewing. For home and café use, the standard Nitro Blade Series is the appropriate choice. The Lab Series is the right option for coffee professionals conducting sensory evaluation, QC work or research brewing.

What does the Red Clix upgrade do and should I get it?

The Red Clix replaces the internal drivetrain of the C40 to halve the click-step interval — instead of each click representing a full step in grind size, each click represents half a step. This doubles the number of distinct grind positions available across the full adjustment range, allowing more precise dialling between settings. For filter brewing, where grind adjustments of even a single click can noticeably shift extraction, the finer control the Red Clix provides is genuinely useful once you're brewing at a level where precision matters. It's a user-installable upgrade that takes a few minutes. If you're new to hand grinding, start with the standard C40 and add the Red Clix once you've developed your technique and want finer control — it's a logical next step rather than a day-one essential.

Is the Comandante C40 good for espresso?

The C40 can grind fine enough for espresso and produces good results at espresso settings, but it has practical limitations for daily espresso use. At espresso fineness, the grinding resistance is significantly higher than at filter settings, making each dose more physically demanding to grind. The click-step adjustment (even with the Red Clix) provides less granular micro-adjustment than a dedicated espresso grinder with a continuous stepped or stepless mechanism, which can make dialling in espresso more of a challenge. The C40 is an excellent choice for a home brewer who primarily makes filter coffee and occasionally pulls espresso; for someone who drinks espresso daily and wants the best possible extraction quality, a dedicated espresso grinder — electric or a purpose-built manual espresso grinder — will serve that workflow more effectively.

How does the Comandante X25 compare to the C40?

The X25 Trailmaster and C40 are designed for different primary use cases. The C40 is a premium home and café hand grinder optimised for grind quality above all else — it's heavier, larger and built for counter use. The X25 is lighter, more compact and ruggedised for outdoor and travel use, with a construction that prioritises portability and durability in field conditions. The X25 uses a different burr set to the C40, optimised for the filter range at its intended use case. For home brewing, the C40 is the better grinder. For backpacking, travel or outdoor brewing where pack weight and robustness matter, the X25 is the purposeful choice. The two complement rather than directly compete with each other.
