Espresso Grinders

Your grinder is the single most important piece of equipment in an espresso setup. A consistent, accurately ground dose is what separates a good shot from a great one — and no machine, however expensive, can compensate for an underperforming grinder. Our espresso grinder range covers everything from compact home models to high-throughput commercial grinders, with brands including Baratza, Fellow, Mahlkönig and Victoria Arduino. We're an authorised Baratza dealer and have been helping UK coffee lovers and café owners find the right grinder since 2008.

Choosing the Right Espresso Grinder

Espresso grinders span a wide range of price points and use cases. Here's how to find the right match for your setup:

Entry level — home espresso (under £200): The Baratza Encore ESP and Fellow Opus are excellent starting points for home baristas. Both offer enough grind range and consistency for everyday espresso, at a size and price that suits most home kitchens. The NadoNado is a strong single-dose option at the entry end of the range.

Mid-range — serious home barista (£200–£400): The Baratza Sette range is purpose-built for espresso, with a unique straight-through grinding path that minimises retention and delivers fast, consistent doses. The Sette 270 offers stepless micro-adjustment; the Sette 270Wi adds integrated weight-based dosing for those who want to grind by the gram rather than by time.

Premium home (£400+): The Baratza Encore ESP Pro sits at the top of the home range with upgraded burrs and a refined grind adjustment system, ideal for enthusiasts dialling in espresso recipes with precision.

Commercial grinders (£2,000+): The Victoria Arduino Mythos and Mahlkönig Grind-by-Sync are professional-grade grinders designed for café environments. Both offer high-volume throughput, stepless adjustment and the kind of shot-to-shot consistency required in a busy service setting. Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a dedicated espresso grinder?

Espresso requires a very fine, consistent grind that most general-purpose or blade grinders cannot reliably produce. A dedicated espresso grinder with precision burrs gives you the control to dial in grind size accurately, which directly affects extraction time, shot balance and flavour. Using pre-ground coffee or an inadequate grinder is the most common reason home espresso disappoints — investing in a good grinder is always the highest-impact upgrade you can make to your setup.

What is the difference between flat burr and conical burr grinders?

Flat burr grinders use two parallel ring-shaped burrs to cut coffee into uniform particles, and are often associated with clarity and separation of flavour in the cup. Conical burr grinders use a cone-shaped inner burr rotating inside an outer ring, and tend to produce a slightly bimodal particle distribution — often described as adding body and sweetness to espresso. In practice, both can produce excellent espresso; the difference is subtle and matters most to experienced palates dialling in for competition or intensive tasting. Most home baristas will find either type excellent. The Baratza Sette and Encore ESP use conical burrs; the Encore ESP Pro uses flat burrs.

What is single dosing and should I use it for espresso?

Single dosing means loading only the exact amount of coffee you need for one shot directly into the grinder, rather than keeping a hopper full of beans. It's popular with home baristas who want to try different coffees without waste or flavour contamination, and with those who want precise dose control. Grinders like the NadoNado are designed specifically for single dosing. Hopper-fed grinders like the Baratza Sette 270 are better suited to those who brew the same coffee consistently throughout the day. For café environments, on-demand hopper grinders are generally more practical.

How do I match a grinder to my espresso machine?

The general rule is to spend at least as much on your grinder as your machine, or close to it. A well-matched pairing ensures neither component is the bottleneck in your setup. For entry-level machines like the Sage Bambino, a Baratza Encore ESP or Fellow Opus is a natural partner. For mid-range semi-automatic machines, the Baratza Sette 270 or 270Wi is a popular pairing. For premium home machines like the La Marzocco Linea Mini, a higher-spec grinder is recommended. If you're building a home espresso setup and want a recommendation, our team is happy to help.

Does Coffee Hit offer a Baratza warranty?

Yes. Coffee Hit is an authorised UK Baratza dealer, which means all Baratza grinders purchased from us come with full manufacturer warranty support. We also have a dedicated Baratza warranty page with information on how to register your grinder and make a claim. Baratza is also well known for their commitment to repairability — spare parts are widely available and we stock a range of Baratza parts and accessories.

How do I clean an espresso grinder?

Regular cleaning prevents stale coffee oils from building up on burrs and affecting flavour. For most home grinders, a weekly brush-out of the burr chamber and chute is sufficient, along with an occasional run-through of grinder cleaning tablets to absorb oils from the burrs. Commercial grinders should be cleaned more frequently depending on volume — daily brushing and weekly deep-cleans are standard practice. We stock a range of grinder cleaning products suitable for both home and commercial use.
