Description

The Hario V60 Switch is the most versatile brewer in the V60 family — a ceramic immersion dripper that gives you the best of two worlds in a single piece of equipment. Use it as a traditional V60 pour-over for clean, bright, tea-like clarity, or flip the switch to full immersion mode for a richer, more forgiving brew that doesn't require a gooseneck kettle or precise pouring technique.

The Switch uses a stainless steel ball valve that holds water inside the ceramic cone during the steep phase — the same principle as the Clever Dripper, but built around Hario's iconic V60 geometry with its 60-degree cone, 24 spiral ribs, and ceramic heat retention. When you're ready to release, press the switch and the coffee flows through the V60 filter into your server below.

Available in Smokey Black and Jasmine White. Made in Japan by Hario.

Why the Hario V60 Switch is the Most Versatile Brewer You Can Own

The Switch is unique because it is not a compromise between two methods — it is genuinely excellent at both. In pour-over mode, it performs exactly like the standard ceramic V60, with all the extraction control and flavour clarity that makes the V60 the world's most respected pour-over dripper. In immersion mode, the stainless steel ball valve creates a full-immersion environment that produces more body, more consistency, and far more forgiveness for beginners or anyone who doesn't want to focus on pour technique.

  • Dual brewing modes — pour-over mode (switch open) for clean V60-style extraction; immersion mode (switch closed) for full steep-and-release brewing
  • Stainless steel ball valve mechanism — the switch physically blocks the drain hole, holding water inside the cone during steeping; pressing releases the valve and coffee flows freely through the filter
  • 60-degree ceramic cone with 24 spiral ribs — identical to the standard V60; ribs create airflow channels between filter and cone wall for even water distribution and optimal extraction
  • Ceramic body — superior heat retention compared to plastic or glass versions; pre-heat with hot water before brewing for maximum temperature stability
  • Compatible with V60 size 02 paper filters — standard Hario V60 filters fit perfectly; available separately at Coffee Hit
  • No gooseneck kettle required in immersion mode — pour-over mode benefits from a gooseneck for precision, but immersion mode works with any kettle
  • Dimensions: W118 × D115 × H133mm — fits standard V60 servers, mugs, and carafes
  • Capacity: approximately 200ml practical brewing capacity
  • Materials: ceramic, silicone rubber, PCT resin, stainless steel
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Includes V60 paper filters
  • Made in Japan by Hario

How to Brew — Immersion Method (Recommended Starting Point)

The immersion method is where the Switch truly shines for consistent, repeatable results:

  1. Place a V60 size 02 filter in the Switch and rinse with hot water (switch open to drain)
  2. Close the switch (ball valve engaged)
  3. Add 15–20g of medium-coarse ground coffee
  4. Pour in 250g of hot water (90–95°C) in a slow, even spiral to saturate all the grounds
  5. Allow a 30-second bloom, then top up to your target water volume
  6. Steep for 2–4 minutes depending on your taste preference (2 minutes for lighter, brighter; 4 minutes for fuller, richer)
  7. Place the Switch over your mug or server and press the button to open the valve
  8. The coffee drains through the filter in approximately 1–2 minutes

Total brew time: approximately 5–6 minutes. Virtually no technique required.

How to Brew — Pour-Over Method

With the switch open from the start, the Hario Switch performs exactly like a standard ceramic V60. Use a gooseneck kettle and your preferred V60 recipe — the Switch is fully compatible with all V60 brewing techniques, recipes, and guides.

Who Is the Hario V60 Switch For?

  • V60 brewers who want the option to brew immersion-style without buying a separate brewer
  • Beginners who find V60 pour-over technique challenging and want a more forgiving entry point that still produces excellent clarity
  • Experienced coffee enthusiasts who want to experiment with different extraction profiles from the same brewer
  • Anyone without a gooseneck kettle — immersion mode works well with any kettle, making it accessible without additional equipment investment
  • Those upgrading from a Clever Dripper who want a ceramic body, better heat retention, and full V60 compatibility

V60 Switch vs Standard V60 — Which Should You Choose?

V60 Switch Standard V60 Ceramic
Brewing modes Immersion + Pour-over Pour-over only
Technique required Low (immersion) / High (pour-over) High
Gooseneck needed Optional Recommended
Heat retention Ceramic — excellent Ceramic — excellent
Filter size Size 02 Size 01 or 02
Price £59.99 From £27.99
Best for Versatility & beginners Pure pour-over precision

If you already own a V60 and want to explore immersion brewing, or if you find consistent pour-over technique difficult, the Switch is the upgrade that opens up both methods. If you want the purest pour-over experience and are confident in your technique, the standard ceramic V60 is the more focused choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Hario V60 Switch and how is it different from a standard V60? The V60 Switch is a ceramic V60 dripper with an added stainless steel ball valve mechanism that allows the drain hole to be blocked during brewing. This enables full immersion brewing — the coffee steeps in hot water like a French press or Clever Dripper before being released through the V60 filter. A standard V60 has no valve and water flows continuously during the pour.

How does the switch mechanism work? A stainless steel ball bearing sits inside the base of the dripper. When the switch is pressed into the closed position, the ball seats against the drain hole and blocks water from flowing through. When you press the release button, the ball lifts and coffee flows freely through the filter. The mechanism is made from stainless steel and silicone rubber for durability and easy cleaning.

Do I need a gooseneck kettle to use the V60 Switch? Not for immersion brewing. Because the water is held inside the cone during steeping, the precision of pour is far less important — a standard kettle poured slowly and evenly works perfectly well. For pour-over mode (switch open), a gooseneck kettle provides better control and is recommended for best results.

How long should I steep coffee in the V60 Switch? Hario recommends approximately 2 minutes as a starting point. A 2-minute steep produces a lighter, brighter cup with more clarity; 3–4 minutes produces more body and richness. James Hoffmann's widely-used Switch recipe uses a 5-minute steep at a coarser grind for a fuller, more complex result. Experiment to find what suits your taste and beans.

What filters does the Hario V60 Switch use? The Switch uses Hario V60 size 02 cone paper filters — the same as the standard V60 02. Both tabbed and untabbed versions work. Hario V60 size 02 filters are available separately at Coffee Hit.

Can I use the V60 Switch as a regular pour-over V60? Yes, absolutely. With the switch in the open position from the start, it behaves identically to a standard ceramic V60. All V60 pour-over recipes, techniques, and guides are fully compatible.
