Description
The Nucleus Coffee Distributor (NCD) is the distribution tool that changed how serious home baristas and specialty cafés approach puck preparation — originally designed by 2015 World Barista Champion Sasa Sestic and refined by Nucleus Coffee Tools into a precision everyday tool for consistent espresso extraction.
Four-Blade Distribution
The NCD's four angular distribution blades are the core of its performance. Drop it into a loaded portafilter, rotate once or twice, and the blades move the coffee grounds outward from the centre, filling any gaps, levelling the surface, and eliminating the voids and density irregularities that cause channelling during extraction. It achieves in a few seconds what finger-WDT, tapping, and the Stockfleth method attempt to do manually — consistently, and without requiring any particular skill or technique from the user.
Adjustable Depth
The depth of the NCD's blades is fully adjustable using the locking collar, with numbered millimetre markers down the side as a guide. This allows you to fine-tune the depth to match your dose size and basket volume — important because different doses fill baskets to different heights, and a fixed-depth distributor can only work well for one setting. Once dialled in for your dose, the lock holds the setting in place through a full service without drift. Compatible with specialty baskets including VST, IMS, and standard commercial 58mm portafilter baskets.
Anti-Static Coating & Build
The interior of the NCD is coated with an advanced low-static surface that prevents ground coffee from clinging to the blades during use. This keeps the tool clean, reduces mess on the bar, and means the full dose stays in the basket where it belongs. The textured, knurled sides provide a secure grip during rotation, and the all-metal construction — stainless steel centre with anodised aluminium adjuster — gives the tool a weighted, balanced feel that makes one-handed operation comfortable. The 58.5mm diameter fits neatly into standard 58mm portafilter baskets and specialty precision baskets including VST and IMS.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Nucleus Coffee Distributor NCD used for?
The NCD is a coffee distribution tool used as part of espresso puck preparation — after dosing from the grinder and before tamping. It is placed into the loaded portafilter basket and rotated to level the coffee grounds, fill any gaps or voids, and create a uniform density across the puck surface. This reduces the risk of channelling during extraction — where water finds the path of least resistance through uneven grounds — and produces more consistent, balanced espresso shots.
Does the NCD replace a tamper?
No. The NCD is a distribution tool, not a tamper. It levels and evens the coffee bed before tamping but does not compress it. The correct workflow is: dose → distribute with the NCD → tamp. The NCD makes the tamping step more effective by giving the tamper a level, even surface to work with, rather than a mounded or uneven bed of grounds.
How do I set the depth on the NCD?
Loosen the locking collar, slide the blade section to the desired depth using the numbered millimetre markers on the side as a guide, then re-tighten the collar to lock the setting. The correct depth varies depending on your dose weight and basket size — the blades should sit just at or slightly above the surface of the loaded coffee bed. Start with a mid-range setting and adjust from there based on how the blades interact with the grounds after rotating.
What portafilter baskets is the NCD compatible with?
The NCD is 58.5mm in diameter, making it compatible with standard 58mm commercial portafilter baskets — the most common size used on machines from brands including La Marzocco, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit, and many others — as well as precision baskets including VST and IMS. It is not designed for 54mm baskets (used on machines such as Breville/Sage) or smaller home machine baskets.
What is the difference between the NCD and WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique)?
WDT uses a thin needle or set of needles to stir and break up clumps in the coffee grounds before tamping — typically performed manually and time-consuming. The NCD achieves a similar outcome through its four-blade rotation in a fraction of the time, and with more consistency across multiple shots. Many baristas use both — WDT for thorough declumping, followed by the NCD for final levelling — but the NCD alone is effective for most home and café use cases.
